The UNOH scrabble team won first place in the Lima Literacy Council's 10th Annual Word Building for Literacy event held at St. Rita's Auxiliary Conference Center, February 21, 2015. Professors Mark Putnam, Randy Blank, and Carmel Morse scored a total of 3,688 points for the win.
At the event, corporate- and community-sponsored teams play Scrabble to benefit local residents who need help building literacy skills. One in five in America are functionally illiterate. Limited literacy costs U.S. businesses and taxpayers $20 billion in lost business earnings, wages, and taxes. This past year alone, the Literacy Council helped 68 new adult clients, many of whom went on to find better jobs or pursue higher education.
