When athletics returned to the University of Northwestern Ohio a decade ago, so too came an increase in international student-athletes studying at UNOH.  In the 2016-2017 school year, UNOH educated more than 150 international students hailing from nearly 50 different countries!  This school year is no different.  To help international students acclimate to American culture and the Lima community they are given the opportunity to visit elementary students at Elida Elementary.

The visit is part of the UN-125 Language & Culture in the United States course at UNOH, which began in the fall of 2013.  The partnership with Elida Elementary school began the following year.  The visit helps international students immerse themselves into the local culture and educational scene.  International students go into the classroom, introduce themselves and their home-country to the grade-schoolers and talk about the culture where they come from.  Then both the international students and the elementary students have a conversation about each other’s culture and type of lifestyle they each lead.

UNOH students will be visiting Elida Elementary on October 12, 19, and 26, 2017.  The communications with Elida Elementary students culminates with the grade-schoolers visiting UNOH for an International Fair at the UNOH Event Center on November 15, 2017.
