Basketball season is in full effect and there is no exception here at University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH). The Racers, coached by Caleb Williams, are currently 2 and 2, with conference play starting Wednesday November 15. Coach Williams is excited for his first season as head coach of the UNOH men’s basketball program and cannot wait see where the year takes them. Coach Williams played collegiate basketball at Mt. Vernon Nazarene University and left a lasting legacy there athletically, but he felt his greatest accomplishment and memories were made off the court.

“My greatest accomplishment was when I became and an Academic All America my junior year. It shows the type of work you produce on the floor but also in the classroom. My favorite memories however, have to do with all the people and friends I met, that influenced my life in so many great ways,” said Williams.

Since it is Coach Williams first season as head coach, I asked him what goals he has for the team. “The biggest goal I have is I want to have constant improvement. I am not caught up in the results.  I take one game at a time, letting the wins and losses come as they may.”

Even though the season has just started for the Racers they have been practicing for a while now so I wondered what accomplishments the team has already achieved and what his most memorable moment so far has been.  According to Williams, “Our greatest accomplishment so far is we are getting 1% better everyday, I feel like we have progressed so much already since we first started. I love the way the guys have adapted the mindset of a continuous group.  My favorite memory so far is our first win against Wilberforce. I have always known I wanted to be a head college basketball coach and this win made it a reality that I am right where I need to be.”

The last question I asked Coach Williams was what he felt was his best quality or qualities that he is bringing to the UNOH basketball program.

“I believe that perspective is my best quality. I have been around small college basketball for five years and I know our conference. I feel like I will be able to combine and pair our strengths to reach our maximum potential," Williams stated. "I also feel like my age is an advantage. Being a young coach I feel like I can relate with my players on a different level.”

Coach Williams and the Racers are beyond ready to see what this season has to offer. You can follow their schedule on the Racers Athletics website.
