UNOH Students enjoying a life-size game of Hungry Hungry Hippo

Written by Contributing Columnist: Brooke Raines

Summer classes are in full swing at the University of Northwestern Ohio, which means it’s time for Summerfest! Summerfest is an opportunity for students to take their minds off of classes and come out and enjoy a day of summer activities. It is also a time to see who all is still on campus during the slower summer months.  On July 17, 2018, there was no doubt Summerfest was happening -  three large blow up games stood behind the Barnes and Noble bookstore getting filled with nice cold water. Students had the chance to cool off, listen to some music and enjoy a delicious cook out.

While some came out to get cooled off, others came out to win. No I’m not talking about win in a game of life size “Hungry, Hungry Hippo” even though students were taken back to their childhood as they competed in the game, I’m talking about win the watermelon eating contest that took place front and center of Summerfest. A $50 gift card was on the line.  UNOH students raced to see who could finish the watermelon first. One young man came out on top, winning the $50 gift card and bragging rights until the next eating contest scheduled for Welcome Week and featuring hot dogs! Some students had to stay dry to head back to class but still had a relaxing time while they played a round of life sized Jenga. One student said, “I came over in between classes to see what Summerfest was all about. The free food was an added bonus!” Another student added, “It’s nice to be able to get out of class and have this to come to because not much goes on during the summer.”

Overall, Summerfest was a perfect splash to get students through the summer quarter. Students now look ahead for one of the most anticipated weeks on campus, Welcome Week! Welcome week begins September 9th and goes through the 13th. The week is packed with activities, concerts and of course tons of free food!! We can’t wait for our current and new Racers to kick off another great Welcome Week.  See you all soon!
