The UNOH Rotaract club continues to work on service projects that impact the Lima region. This past December, the group presented gifts to a local family for the holiday season.  For the third year in a row, the club applied to sponsor a family with Christmas presents as part of the Allen County Children Services Adopt-a-Family program.

The club connected with the Lima Rotary and received sponsorship dollars and fundraising dollars that were used for a shopping spree at area retailers. In fact, the Rotaract members created Christmas decorations made out of pallets and baked many cookies and brownies to “sell” to Lima Rotary members knowing the proceeds would support the Christmas project. Rotaractors had a fun time working together, sometimes by trial and error, to make the decorations and the baked goods. We’re quite certain there was a need to taste-test a few of the baked goods.

Rotaract Club Members Shop for Gifts

Club members met together after Thanksgiving and discussed the wish lists for the family and made plans on what they could buy for each family member. The club then went out to a few stores to buy the gifts, while Dean Fitzpatrick worked on efforts to find wrapping paper and other accouterments for the presents.  A big shout out to a few UNOH staff members that provided wrapping paper rolls, bows, and Christmas labels to the effort. The club members finished wrapping on December 14th and made plans to deliver on December 18th.

‘Twas the hour before delivery, the members loaded the UNOH Admissions ‘sleigh’ and headed to the family’s home to deliver their Christmas presents. From the ringing of the doorbell to the club members’ departure, the family was smiling with gratitude. Even when the family’s father extended his hand for a handshake, a Rotaractor said a Christmas hug was more appropriate. The family’s mom then hugged each of the Rotaractor delivery persons on their way out to the vehicle with an exclamation, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night.” True story.

As the Rotaractors drove away, they shared their excitement and appreciation for being a part of this project. “I loved this project because it helped me get in the Christmas spirit. And when we delivered the gifts, their smiles warmed my heart,” said UNOH student Mayce McCreery.

The Rotaract Club greatly appreciates the support that is provided by the Lima Rotary Club and the UNOH staff. Without their help and support, this project would not have become a wonderful Christmas miracle for a local family in need.
