Mackenzie Hardison poses with Donald Duck at Disney World

UNOH sophomore and Travel and Hotel Management student, Mackenzie Hardison from Haskins, Ohio is currently in Orlando, Florida participating in the Disney College Program at the Walt Disney World® Resort. The Disney College Program is a paid internship that lasts for four to six months where participants are given a specific role to fill for the duration of their internship as assigned by Disney.

The Disney College Program touts itself as an invaluable opportunity for students to have an academically-oriented work environment paired with a resume-building experience all at the “happiest place on earth”.  Mackenzie received word during Fall Quarter that she was accepted into the Disney College Program and was excited to get started! Since arriving in Orlando, Mackenzie has had a lot of positive experiences. “It is a very eye-opening experience in two ways. First, it’s great for a college student who is trying to find themselves and it’s an easy transition into the real world. [Second] They give you many tools to succeed such as a certain amount of study hours a week,” she said.

Mackenzie’s role during her internship is an Attractions Cast Member which means she works within the rides department at any of the four main parks at Walt Disney World.  Her responsibilities include loading and unloading Guests from an attraction, operating sophisticated ride systems, memorizing and delivering lengthy narrations on a microphone to large groups, providing a safe experience for all guests, assisting with audience control during parades, and cleaning areas surrounding attractions.

Another positive, according to Mackenzie, all Disney staff are extremely hands-on when they are teaching or training within the parks. She said many of her courses at UNOH have correlated to what she is doing on a day-to-day basis at Disney.

“I have used many tools from our classes that I use in my everyday work which opened my eyes and assured me that this is what I want to do. They [Disney] also offer many tools to grow in the company. I have had a fun filled experience so far,” Mackenzie stated.

Mackenzie’s internship with Disney lasts through May.
