Chance Holley speaks with UNOH Student Driver Scott Fritz at Volusia Speedway Park

Written by: Chance Holley, UNOH Class of 2020

The 2019 UNOH Motorsports Team trip to Volusia Speedway Park in Florida was a unique opportunity for me as a student of the University of Northwestern Ohio and as someone looking to make a career in the Motorsports industry. The chance to apply the skills I have gained while attending UNOH in real competition against the best dirt race teams and drivers in the nation is extraordinary- I now know how professional race teams operate, and realize that my time at UNOH has prepared me to enter the industry with confidence in my skills and knowledge. The trip also allowed me to bond with my teammates both at and away from the track.

I came to UNOH as a non-traditional student- I spent 7 years after my High School graduation in the commercial construction industry. I did not enjoy my career in construction, and I would often daydream about finding a way out of it and into the motorsports industry. I finally took the plunge and enrolled at UNOH after realizing how much money is spent on motorsports each year, and that with the right training and connections I could make a living in a field that I love. Attending UNOH, being a member of the UNOH Motorsports Team, traveling to Volusia Speedway Park and competing against the best that racing has to offer has truly been a dream come true.

The trip to Volusia Speedway Park allowed me to bond with my teammates in a way that wasn’t previously possible. In my life prior to attending the University of Northwestern Ohio, it was difficult to find anyone who was as interested in racing as I was. I would attempt to have conversations with my fellow High School students or my construction coworkers about motorsports and would be met with polite disinterest at best. Now I’m a member of a team of 80 people and a larger student body that eats, sleeps and breathes racing just like I do. My teammates and I are like a family, and while in Florida we did everything together, working on the cars, learning skills valuable to our future careers, eating meals and even playing putt-putt golf together on an off night. My teammates and I also got the opportunity to attend the NASCAR Monster Energy Series Clash at Daytona International Speedway, which was a great insight into one of the highest echelons of motorsports.

In conclusion, the 2019 UNOH Motorsports Team trip to Volusia Speedway Park was an amazing experience that my teammates and I will always cherish. In addition to the great memories made, we all gained skills and contacts that will greatly benefit us as we build our careers in the High Performance Motorsports industry. I’d like to sincerely thank all the faculty, staff and sponsors of the University of Northwestern Ohio that made this trip possible and those who have prepared me to build a career in an industry that I love.

Thank You,

Chance Holley
