John McGinty, an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Northern Illinois the past four seasons, has been named as the new women's basketball head coach at the University of Northwestern Ohio, Athletic Director Chris Adams announced on Wednesday.

McGinty was the offensive coordinator for the Huskies during his tenure, coordinating all transition, half court and end of game offensive actions.  He led guard instruction on a team and individual basis both on the court and in film sessions, managed scheduling and compliance and assisted with other areas of the program, including recruiting, scouting and game planning.

NIU has recorded 66 wins in the last four years, finishing 19-13 overall and 10-8 in the Mid-American Conference in 2018-19, and has posted three straight .500 or better seasons, marking the first time since 1999-00 and 2000-01 that the Huskies had back-to-back seasons with a .500 winning percentage or better.  The 2016-17 squad, which made the school's first postseason appearance since 1995 in playing in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), finished 21-12 overall and 12-6 in the MAC.

Northern Illinois broke several records during the course of the 2016-17 season as Courtney Woods became just the sixth player in MAC history to reach the century mark in made three-pointers (105) and Ally Lehman set the program's record for assists in a season (214) and in a career (538). Lehman fell just 10 rebounds shy of becoming just the fourth player Division I basketball history to record 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 500 assists in a career.

Before coming to Northern Illinois, McGinty served as an assistant under Carlsen during the 2014-15 season at Lewis. The Flyers opened the season 23-0 to earn the #1 ranking for five-consecutive weeks in the NCAA Division II polls, defeating three Division I opponents during that stretch.  Lewis would finish the season 31-3 overall and 17-1 in conference, a new Great Lakes Valley Conference record, en route to the program's first ever berth to the Elite Eight in 2014-15.

McGinty began working with the Lewis women's basketball program in 2012-13 as a practice player while working towards his master's degree and was a volunteer assistant for one season.

Prior to Lewis, McGinty coached at St. Laurence High School in Burbank, Illinois, where he was an assistant coach with the boys varsity team as well as the head coach of the boys freshmen team in 2012-13 and the head coach of the junior varsity team in 2013-14.

McGinty also has AAU coaching experience, spending a season with Full Package Athletics in 2013 and The Athlete Within (TAW) in 2014.

In addition to his coaching duties at Lewis, the Chicago native served as the compliance assistant for three years.

McGinty graduated from Iowa in 2012 with a degree in sports studies and earned his master's in organizational leadership at Lewis in 2015
