UNOH Morning Graduation Ceremony

The University of Northwestern Ohio’s 99th annual commencement exercises were held this year on Sunday, June 9, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Civic and Convention Center.  A total of 1,158 students from the College of Applied Technologies, College of Business, College of Health Professions, College of Occupational Professions, and Graduate College received their degrees and diplomas.  Of those, 242 students earned two or more credentials!

This is the first year the University has decided to split the graduation exercises into two separate ceremonies.  For the past decade, the graduating class at UNOH grew larger and larger, to the point that the stage was at maximum capacity for graduating students.  To alleviate this situation, administration decided to host two separate ceremonies for the Class of 2018-2019.  The 10 a.m. ceremony featured students who completed their education after the August, Fall, October, and November terms of 2018 along with January, Winter, February, and March terms of 2019.  The 2 p.m. ceremony featured graduates who will complete their education after the Spring, May, June, and Summer terms of 2019.

“It’s a very special day for everyone at UNOH. It’s the final special day for our graduates who have worked hard to attain their degrees and certificates, and we take pride in the fact that we have students from all over the world graduating today. It’s very special for everyone,” said Dr. Jeff Jarvis, UNOH president.

Brooke Raines, a Sport Marketing and Management graduate, said of the day’s events, “I think seeing everyone and just kind of reminiscing on the last four years, it’s been a rollercoaster, so I’m excited to celebrate everyone’s achievements and everything we’ve done and get ready to be adults.”  Raines is looking forward to a career in High Performance Motorsports on the business side of the industry in promotions, marketing or management.

Cameron Blizinski credited UNOH with fulfilling a dream he has always had of working in the racing industry, “I knew how to do a basic brake job and oil change before I came here but I never had a racing family, never had a mechanic for a dad. I went out and chased this, so, basically, UNOH gave me the platform and the basis to go out and chase what I love doing and that’s building race cars.”  Blizinski is hoping to head back home to Michigan and work at a Performance Machine Shop.

The University Grand Marshal this year was Mr. Tom Sypherd.  Sypherd is a Master ASE Certified Instructor in the College of Applied Technologies. He is an instructor in both the Automotive and Diesel division as well as the Alternate Fuels program.  Sypherd has been employed by UNOH for nearly 15 years.  Joseph A. Chirico is the Student Assistant Marshal for this year’s graduating class.

The 2018-2019 University of Northwestern Ohio graduates represent 36 states, including Puerto Rico (Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin), and 27 countries (Australia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Barbados, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Egypt, England, France, Ireland, Jamaica, Mozambique, Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, Russian Federation, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, St. Lucia, Sweden, United Kingdom, Venezuela, Wales, and Zimbabwe).

International students were recognized with stoles marking their country of heritage.  All military service members and veterans were recognized with red, white, and blue cords.  These graduates and faculty members are acknowledged to show respect for their home country or the service they provided for the United States.
