There were a lot of smiling students and faculty members this past June when Redline Equipment dropped off a brand new Case IH Puma 185 tractor to be used as a training ad for the Agricultural Equipment Technology program at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

“It’s pretty awesome,” said student Nathanial Coleman from Pennsylvania. “Being able to utilize this training aid will give us a big advantage in the job market because we’ll have experience working on equipment that is being used in the fields today.”

The tractor is part of a rotating equipment partnership between the University and Redline Equipment. The University will get to utilize the machine for up to 250 hours of training, then Redline will swap the tractor out with a new piece of equipment. Aaron Roth, instructor in the Agricultural Equipment Technology program said partnerships like this are very important for developing quality technicians. “Some of the equipment we use is from the early 1980s, and while students will see machines like that when they are technicians in the workforce, it is very beneficial for them to also train on brand new machines,” he said. “The electronic package on the newest tractors today will be utilized in classes that focus on calibration, electronics, and diagnostics.”

Miles Burton, from North Fairfield, Ohio said being able to work on the Puma will help instructors emphasize the important of the evolution of technology in the farming industry. “Being able to use this tractor and troubleshoot the electronics, hydraulics, transmission, even the GPS features will be skills we’ll need no matter where we work after graduation,” he said.

The tractor will be utilized in technical classes for the first time in the June and August sessions.
