UNOH soccer team volunteers at West Ohio Food Bank

Each year, athletic teams at UNOH are urged to give back to the local community in a variety of ways.  The Men’s Soccer team took that to heart and recently teamed up with the West Ohio Food Bank for a day of packing food boxes for distribution to local families in need.

“The West Ohio Food Bank covers a very large part of the state of Ohio, several countries, tons of communities, and thousands of families,” said UNOH Head Coach Tyler Brock.  “It is a giant operation and they are very giving one.  They do a great job but they have limited workers and the really rely on volunteers to come in and help them prep food, package items and get things ready for delivery.”

The West Ohio Food Bank is the largest food distribution system in West Ohio, coordinating, collecting, warehousing and distributing food for an 11-county area.  The process of getting food to individuals in need requires a dynamic infrastructure and sophisticated management.

"We have worked with them before and they are very professional and caring," added Brock. "They give you a nice presentation of the facilities, show how it is setup and talk about who they help and what they need there before you get started working. That information is great to know and help keep you motivated and focused while you're there working in the facility."

The West Ohio Food Bank secures donations from national food and grocery manufacturers, retailers, shippers, packers and growers and from government agencies, individuals and other organizations. They, in turn, distribute food and grocery items, ensuring the safe storage and reliable distribution of goods to local food pantries and meal programs that served over 5 million meals to children, families, seniors and other groups at risk of hunger.

"Personally, I'm very proud of our boys," said Brock.  "They are great young men and we talk a lot about being servant leaders and giving back to people in need. We actually had a different service project set up, but it fell through. The boys, however, came up with the idea of helping with the Food Bank, so we headed on over and we're able to put in a few hours of work."
