By simply taking one of Dr. Philip McMurry’s classes, one would witness his passion for music throughout the curriculum while he references Woodstock in 1969 as a part of the American counter-culture. Even more obvious, Dr. McMurry brought in his guitar to teach a lesson on the evolution of the Beatle’s music from a musical perspective.

For the past 17 years, Dr. McMurry has been an associate professor in the College of Business teaching history and political science. During those 17 years of living in Lima, he has also immersed himself in the local music scene from playing at Lima’s Rally in the Square, to playing at local coffeehouses like The Meeting Place, and even doing a show at the Lima Mall during a motorcycle exhibit.

More recently, Dr. McMurry formed a band, Walking Boss, which plays covers of classic rock tunes from the mid-1970s through the mid-2000s. Their latest gig was at the annual Wapak Summer Moon Festival which celebrates Neil Armstrong in his hometown of Wapakoneta.  This past weekend was the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and Walking Boss had the honor of performing on stage at the festival that ran for 10 days alongside many other community-centered activities.

Dr. McMurry takes every opportunity he can to mesh his two passions, teaching and music, together by using his creativity. This creativity is also used in a way to find new approaches to best deliver the lesson or song.

“Both teaching and being a musician involve creativity and having an open mind. Every year, I am changing my approach to teaching in order to better reach the students in my classes,” he explained. “For example, when I came to UNOH, the most advanced piece of technology I used was an overhead projector! Now I use all kinds of technology in the classroom. As a musician, we often come up with new ways to approach how we perform a song. We might try a different sound or create a medley of tunes. So it is all about being creative!”

When he’s not in the classroom, you can find Dr. McMurry leading music at the Cable Road Alliance church or check out his band’s Facebook Page,
