UNOH Grad Andrew Hawley, far right, celebrates win at Daytona International Speedway

Written by Communications Specialist Georgia Krebs

The last 4th of July race at Daytona International Speedway was one to remember, not just for all the race fans watching, but especially for UNOH graduate Andrew Hawley. It was the biggest upset in NASCAR history that landed Andrew in Victory Lane with the 77 car for Spire Motorsports. Truly a night that he will carry with him for the rest of his life.

Andrew came to the University of Northwestern Ohio to study high performance all the way from Fabius, New York. His father works for NASCAR on the television side and heard Kenny Wallace speak highly of the university. After coming for a visit, Andrew was sold on going to UNOH.

It is no wonder Andrew has been successful post-graduation. While attending UNOH he took advantage of any opportunity that came his way. He joined the Race Club and Over-the-Wall Club, which helped him form connections in the racing industry while gaining experience with real teams every weekend during race season.

After completing his high performance degree, Andrew landed a job at JD Motorsports in the Xfinity Series. His passion for the job allowed him to quickly move up to Premium Motorsports in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Currently working as the interior guy for the 77 car for Spire Motorsports. Andrew said his career’s biggest accomplishment was winning at Daytona in July.

Andrew’s passion for racing has only continued to grow while working in the industry. “The best part of working in racing is getting to know so many people and making amazing friends and memories,” Andrew told us. “UNOH helped me get here by having so many clubs and opportunities to be able to get the experience in the career field you want to pursue.”

The racing industry is full of high pressure situations where every thousandth of a second matters. What was his key to success?  Andrew says, “Get to know people early and make yourself be known. There are people watching you day-in and day-out on bigger teams. Work hard, stay focused, and the more people you get to know along with the hard work you put in will help you get great opportunities on the bigger teams.”

The experiences and opportunities at UNOH are why Andrew recommends this University to anyone pursuing a career in NASCAR. Now he can enjoy the fast-paced industry of racing, on the other side of the wall than his father.
