2019-2020 UNOH Varsity Men's Basketball

Winter sports season is just around the corner at UNOH with Men’s and Women’s basketball looking to make an impact in the WHAC in the coming months.  Bowling is also off to a good start with a goal of performing well in the Midwest and South tournaments.

 Men’s Basketball

Under third-year head coach Caleb Williams, the men’s basketball team has 82 percent of the scoring and 76 percent of the rebounding back in 2019-20.

The Racers have 11 returnees, including four starters in juniors Nathan Lessing and Oslbey Mercer and sophomores Isaac Golson and Zach Montes.  Lessing averaged 15.1 points per game while Mercer averaged 8.3 points per contest.  Golson led the team with 39 three-pointers while Montes averaged 15.2 points per game.

Also returning is senior Tanner Eubank, juniors Jesse Ditto and Aaron Hammond and sophomores Alex Cluff, Bailey Gardner, Justin Koepp and Ladji Samoura.

Seven newcomers round out the roster for UNOH, including juniors Elijah Pughsley and Jan Van Selst, sophomore Joshua Cassell and freshmen Donta Henry, Cedric Delancy, Trevon Wells and Garrett VerBerkmoes.

Along with the 20-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference slate, the schedule also includes matchups with local rivals Goshen, Grace, Indiana South Bend, Mount Vernon Nazarene, Shawnee State, Cincinnati Christian and Thomas More.  The Racers also travel to Florida to face Warner and Webber International in December.

The women’s basketball team enters a new era in 2019-20 as John McGinty becomes the fourth head coach in program history.  McGinty comes to UNOH after serving as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Northern Illinois the past four seasons.

Just one letterwinner returns for the Racers in sophomore guard Ronja Orpo, who appeared in all 31 games with three starts in 2018-19, connecting on 30 three-pointers.  Senior guard Tori Lennartz, who appeared in five games off the bench for UNOH during the 2016-17 season, also returns.

Newcomer for UNOH include guards Jada Haines, Chloe Andrew, Shelby Morehead, Erin Scott and Talor Washington along with forwards Tya Bell, Alyssa Murray, Kimyra McGhee, Katie Simpson and Tayler Brewer.

The schedule features the 20-game WHAC slate and Ohio Christian, Rio Grande, Calvin and Carlow along with a trip to Florida to face Warner and Webber International in December.

Ryan Clarke, Jordan Howard, Devon Richardson, Owen King, Gage Stelling, Caleb Johnson. Nick Pope and Gunner Kruse should be key contributors for UNOH on the men’s side.

On the women’s side, McKenzie Kraft, Courtney Brooks, Jenna Blumenschein, Carolynn Thomas, Megan Elwell, Madison Current, Sarah Lowther and Haylie Rotz should be key contributors.

After opening the season by hosting the Racers Classic, both teams will compete in events throughout the Midwest and South before competing in the postseason sectionals.
