UNOH Students at 2019 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV

Written by Contributing Columnist Brianna Glowinski

Sometimes opportunities are spare of the moment signals from the universe. Other times, opportunities are presented in weekly emails coming from your University's Dean. This year, I had the chance to attend the SEMA show with a group of exceptional individuals from the University of Northwestern Ohio.

The organization’s missions is, “A love for cars, trucks and SUVs is the motivating force behind the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). This trade association consists of a diverse group of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishing companies, auto restorers, street-rod builders, restylers, car clubs, race teams and more.”

At the show I attended seminars hosted by the SEMA Businesswomen's Network (SBN) touching on leadership and entrepreneurship. I met some of the biggest names in the automotive aftermarket and high performance industry, and learned about their paths to success. I shared hors d’oeuvres with top fuel dragster team owners and drivers.

My fellow student ambassadors and I spent time collecting and distributing business cards and resumes with people who have blazed trails for the trade world. We watched new product showcases and saw countless one of a kind vehicles that people put their hearts into. I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity I was awarded to attend this event.

The SEMA Scholarship is open to students pursuing a career in the automotive industry. Whether it is in fabrication, racing, or business law, SEMA has a place for you. Some of the things the scholarship board looks for in a student’s application include: GPA, industry involvement, and your plans to better the industry. Scholarships award up to $5,000 for tuition or loan forgiveness.

UNOH takes it a step further by selecting and sponsoring some the scholarship recipients to attend the SEMA show in Las Vegas. The SEMA scholarship committee is currently accepting applications through March 1, 2020. Watch your student email for more information on some of these life-changing opportunities.

A special thanks to the UNOH, SEMA Education, SBN, Dr. Jarvis, Mr. Farmer, Mr. Meager and Mr. Becker for their leadership, mentorship, and guidance on the networking chance of a lifetime.
