UNOH Postpones Athletics Until 2021

Posted on Wednesday, November 18, 2020

Following an increase in COVID-19 cases in both local and regional areas, along with a resurgence of cases amongst the competing universities within the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference, the University of Northwestern Ohio has decided to suspend all collegiate athletic events until January 2021.

The Men’s and Women’s basketball season was slated to begin competition next week. All games on the schedule will be cancelled until conference play begins with an away game on January 2, 2021 against Siena Heights University in Michigan for both the men’s and women’s teams. The postponement will also include all practices for teams that are not currently in season in order to mitigate any potential spread of COVID-19 within the UNOH athletic programs.

Classes for a majority of UNOH athletes will conclude on November 24, 2020 and not begin again until January 11, 2021.  Prior to resuming practices and competition, all student-athletes will be required to follow a quarantine protocol, depending on their mode of travel, upon their return to campus following the holiday season.

“Our focus right now is on the health and safety of our athletes as well as the greater UNOH community.  Many of the universities we compete with are located in Michigan, and when they suspended athletics until January, it only made sense for UNOH to follow suit to give our league the best possible chance to have a successful season in 2021 for all of our sports programs,” said Director of Athletics Chris Adams. “We recognize the important role that collegiate athletics plays both on and off the field for our student-athletes, and we will continue to work with our coaches and athletic training staff to enforce return-to-play standards for each of our athletes and teams as they prepare for their 2021 season.”

The decision to postpone winter sports until 2021, which includes Men’s and Women’s Basketball, follows the July announcement that fall sports at UNOH would move their competitive season to the spring of 2021.  Fall sports at UNOH include Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, and Men’s and Women’s Golf.
