The 86th National Football League Draft was held this spring in Cleveland, Ohio. The annual meeting of NFL franchises to select newly eligible players for the upcoming NFL season is an event for not only the players and teams, but for fans near and far. UNOH’s Sport Marketing & Management students had the opportunity of a lifetime and were able to volunteer to assist at the NFL Draft. They took their knowledge out of the classroom and onto the Browns’ field.

The two days were spent volunteering at different events within the overall Draft experience. “Working at the draft made me really want to work even harder to push myself and start my career,” UNOH Sport Marketing and Management student, Dustyn Rivera, stated.  “I also get to use this experience as part of my resume. Organizations in the sports world look for experiences like this to help select who is good for their company and who has that experience and knowledge to get the job done.”

Dustyn’s experience started with a rainy day, but that didn’t stop the fun. She volunteered at ‘Time to Shine’ where fans were able to be mock drafted. The next day was spent working with children at the PLAY60 area. This experience was a mock training camp for kids. The fun continued after the volunteer shifts, as the students were able to experience the draft like a fan.

“One of my favorite parts of the trip was coming with my friends and amazing professor to see the draft with my own eyes,” Dustyn exclaimed. “That is something I will never forget. Being able to surround myself with people that understood what I wanted to do with the rest of my life and having the same level of passion as you is a whole different feeling.”

There are many other internship opportunities that come from being a Sport Marketing major and attending UNOH. “Not only do they help prepare you to work in the sports field,” Dustyn stated. “UNOH constantly offers us opportunities to experience hands-on learning.” These opportunities vary from internships to volunteering at events like the NFL Draft.

Even during these challenging times, opportunities are still available for students to take advantage of. Dustyn, and other Sport Marketing and Management students, are very grateful for the once in a lifetime opportunity to happen!
