With the biggest Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race of the year upon us, University of Northwestern Ohio alumni and students are preparing to put their skills to the test at the 41st annual Dirt Track World Championship.
UNOH alumni and Kendallville, Indiana native Mason Bevard has spent the 2021 season touring with the #71 Lazy Days RV sponsored entry piloted by Hudson O’Neal. O’Neal and the #71 team sit 2nd in LOLMDS points going into the season ending crown jewel event. While a student at UNOH, Mason was a driver and a crew chief on the UNOH Motorsports Team, which fields dirt stock cars and UMP Modifieds at the University owned Limaland Motorsports Park as well as tracks such as Volusia Speedway Park, Eldora Speedway, I-55 Raceway and many more. When asked about his opportunity with O’Neal earlier this year, Mason said “I love it, this team has taught me so much and they have truly pushed me to the next level. It is unbelievable to travel up and down the road with such an amazing group that is just as passionate about this sport as I am.”
DJ Williams from Avenue, Maryland, will be turning the wrenches of the #40B driven by Kyle Bronson at Portsmouth Raceway Park. DJ is a proud graduate of the High Performance Motorsports Technology degree program at UNOH and is also an alumni of the UNOH Motorsports Team. Sitting 5th in points, the team achieved a major goal earlier this year, winning a crown jewel event at the Imperial Tile Silver Dollar Nationals. When asked about the victory, DJ expressed his gratitude for his education, “After the race Kyle asked me if I ever thought I would end up in Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory lane. I told him that it had been my dream since I was young, but growing up I never thought I could make it a reality. Thanks to UNOH I turned my dreams into reality and my passion into a career!”
Hailing from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, current student Tim Krier is earning his Associate Degree in High Performance Motorsports Technology and working full time for Best Performance Motorsports and driver Tyler Erb. With their shop located only a short drive from campus, and thanks to UNOH’s 4-day-a-week, 5-hour-per-day schedule, Tim has been able to get hands-on training in class while also getting on-the-job experience with a top level LOLMDS team. Erb and the Best Performance crew have racked up an impressive 6 wins on the season and are red hot heading into the $100,000 to win season finale.
Four additional current students will be paired with some of the best teams in the dirt racing world this weekend as part of the UNOH LOLMDS Internship program. Jamie Sullivan of Christmas, Florida, Randy Giroux of Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada, Shelby Fisher of Sterling Heights, Michigan and Hunter Hagen of Broomes Island, Maryland will all have the unique opportunity to experience the Dirt Track World Championship as members of top level LOLMDS crews while networking with teams and drivers!
