For some, working with a championship level Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) team is a lifelong goal. For a select group of UNOH students this year, that goal will be achieved. The UNOH Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Internship is a first-of-its-kind program that offers students the opportunity to gain experience working with the best teams that dirt racing has to offer. The program is open to all University of Northwestern Ohio students, regardless of major. Students will intern with teams at select LOLMDS races throughout the season.
For the upcoming Indiana Icebreaker, at Brownstown Speedway, and the Buckeye Spring 50, held at the historic Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, four current students will get the chance to turn the wrenches on 900 horsepower Super Late Models. Students Ashtin Slizewki and Dylan Henkins will pair up with the #7 team and pilot Ross Robinson, while Ethan Stadniczuk tends to the #25 machine of the Georgia Bulldog, Shane Clanton. Rounding out the group will be Dylan Murray, who will work with one of the sport’s most exciting up and coming drivers, Ricky Thornton Jr. in the #20RT SSI Motorsports entry.
Through their partnership with UNOH, Lucas Oil has committed to helping build the next generation of technicians in the automotive, high performance motorsports, diesel, agricultural equipment and robotics industries. And the students appreciate the support. “It’s been my lifelong goal to make it to the top level in dirt racing.” said student Dylan Murray. “With my education at UNOH, I am confident I have the skills necessary to work on a championship caliber team. Now, thanks to Lucas Oil, I am getting the chance to showcase those skills in front of teams I want to work for. I’ve been working my whole life to have an opportunity like this and now that it’s here I am going to make the most of it.”
Also in attendance will be many UNOH alumni working full time with Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series teams. Teams featuring the talent of UNOH-trained mechanics will include the number #89 G.R. Smith owned entry piloted by Ashton Winger, the Double Down Motorsports #71 driven by Hudson O’Neal, the KBM #40B with Kyle Bronson behind the wheel, and the Best Performance Motorsports #1 wheeled by “Terbo” Tyler Erb.
