UNOH Sport Marketing Students Intern at Super Bowl LVI

Written by Communications Specialist Georgia Beard

A dozen Sport Marketing and Management students had the opportunity to put their education to use at the biggest football event of the year, the Super Bowl. The students traveled to Los Angeles, California, with two professors, to intern for the three days leading up to Super Bowl LVI.

The students worked as volunteers for the Super Bowl Experience which is the NFL's interactive theme park offering games and activities for people of all ages. This was a great opportunity for the Sport Marketing and Management students to see behind the scenes of setting up large sporting event activities, while gaining experience actually executing the event.

Sport Marketing and Management professors often teach students about the importance of networking in the industry and this trip was the time to put that advice to work. Haleigh Gray remembered the networking tip and said, “The moment we landed in California, till the moment we left, I spoke with fellow classmates as well as complete strangers about their experiences within the sport industry. On the flight home, I spoke with someone who worked for NBC Sports and was simply amazed by all the amazing intel about the industry he had to offer.”

Haleigh worked the Pre-game and Post-game parties for the Cincinnati Bengals outside of SoFi Stadium. The days were long, but Haleigh was able to get a few pictures and autographs from all different teams in the NFL. “I learned to live in the moment and cherish the opportunities we were being given,” Haleigh exclaimed.

This was the third year the Sport Marketing and Management program has taken students to a Super Bowl event, and after taking 2021 off due to COVID-19 pandemic precautions, the students were more excited than ever to experience the Super Bowl in person. Their trip ended with a bang at the Bengals' post-game party, where they were able to watch Kid Cudi and Nelly perform in Pauley Pavilion. Haleigh describes this as her favorite part of the trip, “This moment was truly impeccable.  Everyone there celebrated the successes of the Bengals' season rather than dwelling on the loss of the game.”

Internships and other hands-on opportunities are offered to Sport Marketing and Management students throughout the year. Upcoming trips include the NCAA Final Four and NFL draft events.
