Ten University of Northwestern Ohio students, along with two faculty members, participated in the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Ohio (AICUO) Independent College Day at the Ohio Statehouse on Tuesday, March 7th. This event is organized to showcase the numerous independent and private colleges across the state and discuss the programs and services offered to students with Ohio legislators.

UNOH brought one of the largest groups to the event, and the students participated in many conversations relating to state policy throughout the day. First, students heard from various speakers and legislators on the importance of four-year institutions in Ohio, highlighted by an address from the Chancellor of Higher Education, Randy Gardner. Students then had the opportunity to meet many lawmakers and ask questions they felt were relevant to their lives.

One of the members the students spent time with was Representative Angie King (R-Celina) who represents the 84th House district (Auglaize, Mercer, Darke). “It was a pleasure to meet the students and their professors from the University of Northwestern Ohio,” said Representative King. “These bright students are being prepared to take responsible positions within business and industry. I have no doubt of their future success!”

UNOH students also met for an extended period of time with Lima’s state representative, Susan Manchester (R-Waynesfield). “It was great to meet with students and teachers from UNOH! I appreciated hearing perspectives on issues that are most pressing to these bright young constituents,” stated Representative Manchester. “As a leader and proud advocate of education in Ohio, it is crucial to engage and listen to the voices of our youth as we deliberate policy here at the Statehouse”. Rep. Manchester represents the 78th House district (Allen, Auglaize).

Following discussions with legislators, students took a complete tour of the statehouse and the Ohio Supreme Court. Willow Titus and Zoe Wuermli, students in the Business Administration program, both gladly shared their thoughts on the experience.

“It was a really great experience to visit the statehouse,” said Titus. “I enjoyed hearing from all the different representatives and what they had to say. I feel as a group we were able to make a statement to let them know our school is here and we are doing great things at UNOH.”

“It was pretty impressive to see the Statehouse, as well as the Supreme Court. Getting the chance to walk around and learn more about the history of these buildings was amazing,” explained Wuermli.

She also felt this visit gave students a chance to put the UNOH name on the minds of many area lawmakers. “It was great getting the opportunity to talk to different politicians, ask questions and represent our university. Everyone was very kind and open and listened to our questions and concerns."

Participating in the AICUO Independent College Day is just another way in which UNOH strives to provide a quality, industry-focused education that will prepare students for their future careers while becoming productive citizens of their respective communities.
