UNOH AMA Students and Advisors at Conference in New Orleans

Written by Contributing Columnist Assistant Professor John Strouse

Four members and three advisors representing the UNOH Chapter of the American Marketing Association traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana to attend the AMA International Collegiate Conference which brings together more than 300 chapters from around the world.

Three students participated in the Perfect Pitch competition. The Perfect Pitch competition is like an elevator pitch, where each student has ninety seconds to earn an interview for a given position. The student gives their “Perfect Pitch” in front of a panel of judges with the clock starting when the student walks through the door.

A two-student team competed in the Marketing Strategy competition. In this event, the team is given information about a new product. The team has 20 minutes to come up with a marketing strategy by answering a set of given questions. Then, the team puts together a 10-minute presentation to include their views of the product along with answering questions from a panel of judges.

“I didn't know much about business operations but now after attending the conference where I competed in events and listened to guest speakers, I have a greater understanding of how the industry works and how to succeed in it" said Freshman Marcus Freewalt, a Digital Multimedia student from Delphos, Ohio.

In addition to competitions, students participated in workshops and break-out sessions. Two UNOH AMA members attended a workshop focused on digital media marketing. All UNOH AMA members attended speaker sessions to learn about various marketing topics. Members also attended the leadership sessions, where members of other chapters discuss how they completed a given activity such as fundraising, for example. It was during these breakout sessions that UNOH members were able to network with other student chapter members from around the country.

"Before the trip, I wasn't knowledgeable about all aspects of marketing,” said Freshman Emma Amstutz, a Digital Multimedia student from Lima, Ohio. “By sitting through the speaker sessions, the digital marketing workshop, and talking with advisors, I gained a lot of insight and advice for what we can do next year with our chapter"

UNOH AMA advisors, Thomas Legeman, Allan Pohlman, and John Strouse, spent their time attending different sessions that were geared towards managing the student chapters as well as judging on-site competitions, and networking with fellow advisors.

During the awards ceremony, UNOH’s chapter received an honorable mention for its Marketing Week activities. During Marketing Week, the UNOH chapter took over UNOH's snapchat account, handed out cupcakes to individuals that directly support the chapter on campus, painted the spirit rock, and hosted a movie night at Racers Station.

Freshman Dixon Smith, a Motorsports Marketing student from Austin Texas said the most memorable moment for him was meeting other chapter members and listening to the keynote speaker, "I enjoyed getting to know everyone better during the trip. The presentation by the Chief Marketing Officer from PearPop was my favorite part of the conference."

Outside of the conference, students had the opportunity to enjoy authentic New Orleans cuisine at many restaurants and take in a few sites of the city.

"We had an amazing time,” said UNOH AMA Chapter President, Sophomore, Kevin Theile, a Motorsports Marketing student from North Ridgeville, Ohio. “It was great to learn more skills and to network with our peers from other colleges"
