FSi Racing and Tuning with UNOH Graduates Masyn Derf and Tim Jayne
UNOH graduates Masyn Derf and Tim Jayne grew up near each other in Northern Indiana. In 2009, they became classmates and carpool buddies until graduating with their High Performance Motorsports Technology and Automotive Technology degrees in 2011.
At first, they took very different paths. Tim started out in a muffler shop and then chose the manufacturing route, working for an orthopedic company making tools for surgery. He cut his teeth in CNC machining, working his way up to supervisor. Eventually, he was put in charge of programming the machines.
Masyn spent the first nine years out of college as a technician in a Chevrolet dealership where his dad was the service manager. Outside of their day jobs, Masyn and Tim always worked on race cars. “I would work 6:30 am-3:30pm at my manufacturing job and then 4:00 pm until 11:00 pm doing side work,” Tim explains. “I just couldn’t do it anymore.”
In October of 2020, Tim and Masyn decided to invest in their true passion and teamed up to open FSi Racing & Tuning in a pole barn on Masyn’s property. It’s a high performance shop specializing in late-model GM vehicles. Masyn runs the business end and the build side of it while Tim (known as “Nub”) performs the tuning, runs the dyno, and orders parts.
They still have high-power dreams on the side. When not working in their shop, you can find them traveling regionally to race in many no-prep drag racing events.
Tim and Masyn look back fondly on their time at UNOH. “I doubled up on classes to get through and I wish I would have taken more time to enjoy all the school had to offer.” Masyn reflects. “It’s the place to be if you want to work in high performance.”
FSi Racing now has four employees and Masyn wants to keep growing. They are happy to connect with other UNOH alumni and students who share common interests and may want to hear about the lessons they learned on this journey. You can find FSi Racing & Tuning on Facebook as well as their website: fsirace.com.
