Patrick Boldt ’22 loves what he does and loves learning all he can to make himself a better technician.
Boldt grew up in Greenwood, Indiana. After high school, he enrolled at a local college but realized it wasn’t for him. So, in 2012, he joined the Marine Corps and spent 7 ½ years serving his country. After completing his service, Boldt worked a few odd jobs and heard from his brother-in-law about the HVAC Program at UNOH.
After looking into it, he knew it was what he needed to be successful, plus, he could use his G.I. Bill to pay for his schooling.
While at UNOH, teachers encouraged him and his classmates to try out for the ServiceTitan HVAC National Championship. So, he took the initial test and qualified round after round, eventually landing him down in Tampa, Florida for the final round in 2022 among the best students and professionals in the country. That year, he placed third in the apprentice division, winning $5,000. In 2023, he took his skills all the way to the top, placing first and winning $25,000. This past September, he competed as a professional for the first time, capturing second place overall and an additional $15,000 prize.
When asked why he thinks he continues to excel in the competition, Boldt said, “I think it’s my attention to detail. You just need to know how to follow directions and go through the proper troubleshooting steps.”
The 33-year-old also credits learning the science behind the technology while at UNOH.
“At UNOH, you really learn the foundational principles and the basics of how everything works.” He said. “Then it’s up to you to use problem-solving techniques to figure it out.”
Boldt is a fifth-year apprentice service technician at Smith-Boughan Mechanical in Lima. He is working toward eventually becoming a journeyman. He plans to continue competing in the ServiceTitan HVAC National Championship, hoping to take the top spot one day as a professional.
Currently, Boldt is celebrating his accomplishments by enjoying family life out in the country with his wife, Alissa, and two daughters, Aria, age 4, and Loretta, age 2.
The 2024 ServiceTitan National Championships will air on the CBS Sports Network this December. Join the ETCS Legends Club on hvacnationals.com to find out when!
