On Tuesday, November 19, Changing Campus Culture hosted the first of three panel discussions for this year’s annual campaign, “Breaking the Stigma: Females Working in Predominantly Male Professions.” This impactful discussion featured a diverse group of accomplished women who have broken barriers and excelled as leaders in their field.
“At UNOH, we are committed to providing opportunities for all students, including women pursuing degrees in traditionally male-dominated fields,” said Danielle McClure, UNOH Director of Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness. “Events like Breaking the Stigma allow our students, faculty, and staff to engage in the important, often challenging conversations that lead to a more inclusive and well-rounded workforce.”
There were six panelists representing multiple programs across campus. Missy Stephens of Auto Care Association; Lauren Reinhold, Diesel Instructor at UNOH; April Jackson, Marketing Instructor at UNOH and Charles River Laboratories; Ashley Keller, Adjunct Motorsports Marketing Instructor at UNOH and Chevrolet; Madelyn Downing, Agribusiness Instructor at UNOH; and Jen Dervarics, Athletic Director at UNOH came together to share their experiences as females working in careers that are predominantly male.
Panelists gave nearly 20 students tips on interview preparation, utilizing mentors, professional achievements, and overcoming barriers in the workforce. Students had the opportunity to interact with panelists and discuss career opportunities.
Breaking the Stigma is part of a broader UNOH initiative to encourage open dialogue, answer questions, and build networks supporting students' workforce readiness. The event underscores the university’s dedication to empowering all individuals to thrive in their chosen fields.
This year's next seminar will be held during the winter term and will focus on men supporting women in predominantly male professions. Panelists will be made up of allies for women and supporting equality in the workforce.
