UNOH Students pose with Graduate Jamie Sullivan and Monster Mutt Dalmatian

Written by Contributing Columnist Gerry Keysor, UNOH Admissions

The University of Northwestern Ohio allowed more than 50 current students to attend the first of three Monster Jam events in November in Dayton, Ohio, at the Erwin J. Nutter Center.

Saturday afternoon’s event also allowed the students and other attendees to get an up-close experience via the Monster Jam Pit Party, which takes place before the engines are fired and the drivers get behind the wheel of their 12,000 lb, specially built Monster Trucks.

Current UNOH student Jamie Sullivan was among the drivers on Saturday, adding to the excitement of the fellow students in attendance.

Sullivan, who attends classes online while piloting the Monster Mutt: Dalmatian truck, made the event even more exciting by winning competitions in Two-Wheel Skills and Freestyle en route to the overall event win.

Following the competition, Sullivan came into the seating area to talk with the students about her experiences behind the wheel of the mudslinging, fire breathing, easily recognizable Monster Truck, and her experiences as a UNOH student.

The students were then all treated to a peek behind the scenes as they were taken to the pit area to see what the teams, which include UNOH alumni and the UNOH Monster Jam club members, have in store between events.

With just a four-hour window, all the trucks are repaired and readied for the next competition, and the track is reset, rebuilt, and repainted for the evening show.

While in the pit area, the students got to be part of a celebratory photo with Jamie and the Monster Mutt Dalmatian monster truck, further enhancing their amazing experience at Monster Jam.

One of the exciting benefits of being a UNOH student includes the clubs available on campus.  The Monster Jam club is a relatively new club that gathers the students who enjoy Monster Jam and allows for opportunities to go to some of the events as support staff, helping with track marking and preparation and helping with setup and teardown of Pit Party events.  To be added to the email list and potentially join the Monster Jam club at UNOH, please email Mjclub@unoh.edu
