Written by Contributing Columnist, Lauren Reinhold, Diesel Technology Instructor

In January, four University of Northwestern Ohio students were selected to participate in an internship program at the Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week show in Grapevine, Texas. This opportunity was provided through the collaboration of various companies, including MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers, AWDA, and CVSN. The internship program has been part of the HDAW show for years providing opportunities for students to connect with the industry. This was the first year UNOH was invited to attend.

Heavy Duty Aftermarket Week (HDAW) is the largest event in North America that brings together professionals from the heavy duty aftermarket industry. Nearly 3,000 professionals from eight countries were in attendance this year. Owners, executives, managers, distributors, suppliers, service providers, and educators gathered in Texas to network, make deals, share products and industry updates, and drive the future of the aftermarket industry.

Students were invited to apply for the program and went through an interview and selection process to secure their acceptance into the program. Students selected include:

College of Applied Technologies

  • Kody Pond (Kenton, Ohio)- Medium/Heavy Duty Diesel Technology- FleetPride
  • Haylei Walker (Horseheads, New York)- Medium/Heavy Duty Diesel Technology- Vander Haag’s
  • Logan Webb (Clarkston, Michigan)- Medium/Heavy Duty Diesel Technology- Cargo HD

College of Business

  • Sharifah Binyahya (Perrysburg, Ohio) - Business Administration, Management, and Operations with Supply Chain Management- HDA Truck Pride

Each student was paired with a sponsor. Sponsors include distributors and suppliers in the heavy duty aftermarket industry. The sponsoring company covered the costs for the students to participate in this program. Through the internship program the students had the opportunity to attend educational seminars, network, and work one-on-one with their sponsoring companies learning the ins and outs of the heavy duty aftermarket industry.

The University of Northwestern Ohio also received industry exposure at the Innovation Intersection. The Innovation Intersection was a new addition to the show and expo this year. This portion of the expo featured education and training-based companies and universities that work to ensure the heavy duty aftermarket industry has a well prepared and educated workforce.

The University of Northwestern Ohio would like to thank HDA Truck Pride, FleetPride, Cargo HD, Vander Haag’s, Frontier Truck Parts, MEMA, CVSN, and AWDA for making this opportunity possible!
