UNOH High Performance S&S Students at Eldora Speedway
Written by Neil Orsborne, Auto/Diesel/High Performance Instructor at UNOH
Students from the High Performance Steering and Suspension class attended the first night of the World 100 on Thursday, September 4th. The purpose of the trip was for the students to see real-world action and to interact with speedway officials, technical officials, race teams, and manufacturers. Along the way, our class encountered former graduates who are now successfully working on teams or even owning their own businesses. They were impressed with how fast the teams worked and how efficiently the tech officials were at the track.
Our first stop of the night was with DJ Williams from DJ’s Racing Solutions. DJ is a UNOH graduate and former member of the motorsports team. He was there assisting Chris Ferguson. He spoke with the students about the importance of attention to detail, working hard, and how the information they have already learned in the HP S&S class has helped him on his journey. Our next stop was with Devin Moran from Double Down Motorsports. He spoke with the students about how to get into motorsports and what life was like on the road. He even brought out a shock setup with stack springs to show the students.
The third stop of the night was with Garrett Alberson’s team. Garrett spoke with the students about weight transfer and demonstrated the suspension components on the car. Currently, one student from class is working with this team this season, so we were able to watch him in action throughout the night. Next, as the class was walking down the front stretch, Steve Arpin from Longhorn Chassis approached us. He invited the students and instructors into the hauler for a tour. He showed the students how important it was to stay organized, understand their roles on the team, and recognize all the available job opportunities.
The students were able to attend the drivers’ meeting and were welcomed by Eldora Track officials Levi Jones and Matt Curl. They learned what the process was for the drivers and teams for the night. Once qualifying began, they were able to observe some technical inspections, and officials even took the time to speak with the students. The final stop was with Mike Nuchols from Warrior race cars. He spoke with students about tires, tire compounds, and spring/shock adjustments. Overall, the students had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the nighttime racing!
